Technically, the game runs okay, has nice art, and capable voice acting. The ui is terrible, especially for dialogue. The "scroll tire" is way less intuitive than just touching items on-screen, but the game doesn't tell you that's an option, or even that walking around is possible for that matter. A brief tutorial is always a nice inclusion for new players or those playing on a new platform.
As an adventure game, it's beyond maddening. Clicking on ANYTHING you need to look at (and there is a lot) elicits a conversation from S&M. Ninety percent of the game is listening to characters spool out "witty" banter while you're just trying to play a game. What works in moderation for the comic is absolutely ruined with incessancy in the game. It gets old very quickly.
Once you actually have to solve a puzzle, you realize the solutions are as arbitrary as the worst the genre has to offer. Fans of logical thinking should turn back now, as the game features many puzzles that result in the player asking oneself "Why would I ever have thought to do that/combine those?" It's not that the game is hard, it's just often nonsensical.
It's hard to believe this team has members that worked for LucasArts during their adventure heyday, but I suppose nobody said they were the talented members.
Sam and max are awesome but
I love Sam and Max, the graphics are great, there is so much attention to detail and the puzzles are not super hard but no easy either. My only problem with this release is that the first chapter (the rest have not been released yet) seems very short, even if there are more installments to come.
Just a reminder for those who are newer to these types of games... Periodically save your game! This one crashed on me and if I had not manually saved it I would have had to start over after I was already an hour in since the game didn't auto-save.
Great game bad controls
When the game starts you see two characters that you will instantly love. The puzzles in this game at times can be very hard, but rewarding when you finish them. The disappointing thing is when the game gets closer to the end, a lot of the puzzles require a large amount of backtracking.
Only other complaint is the touch screen controls sometimes click things you didn't want but you get used to it
In the end telltale delivers a great game full of wonderful characters, tricky puzzles and a interesting yet funny plot but is brought down by its bad controls and backtracking.
