Great fit for a touch screen
I knew it wouldn't be long before a MtG game launched on the iPad, and this is the perfect fit. The deck selection is perfectly diverse and overall pretty well balanced with a few outliers. Campaign and revenge campaign are fun enough although I can't imagine anyone wanting to play 60 games against the computer to unlock two full decks let alone more. The puzzles are indeed a fun change of pace that can leave you scratching your head for a while.
This game can be frustratingly glitchy though. The fact that you can't communicate with the person you are playing leads to a lot of premature disconnects. If you concede a game you shouldn't be kicked out entirely if you want a rematch. Not as important in other decks, but something like Mana Mastery makes the completely obtuse method of selecting which lands you want to use to cast a spell incredibly frustrating. It lacks a lot of modes the console and steam counterparts have.
Pretty much all of this would be okay if the online multiplayer didn't feel completely out of touch. I know Wizards can't control people randomly quitting or shutting off their iPad, but the ranking system is buried under menus with no explanation on how it works, and the lack of communication (which could be an iOS development issue? Not sure) makes multiplayer feel empty and lonely.
Good app for iPad--Great for iPad 4
I've had this app for a while now, and have really enjoyed it, having started playing Magic some 15+ years ago, but stopping after high school. Only trouble was, the app was very crash-prone on my iPad.
I generally could make it through a single match, but it reliably crashes after the duel, sometimes before saving, which means the card I earned got lost. It would also reliably crash if I had to switch apps in the middle of a duel, or if there was something too graphically demanding, like a bunch of creatures being killed off by a single spell. I have not been able to successfully complete a Planeswalker duel.
Still, it was fun, and nice to unlock cards through play. It would be nice to have greater control over deck building, but I understand that limiting that is intended as an incentive to branch out to the cards themselves.
Just bought an iPad 4 yesterday, and just got done playing 4 matches back-to-back-to-back-to-back without a crash, and that was even with app-switching in the middle. I suspected that the issue I was having was the iPad 1's processor, and I'm glad that seems to be the case.
Great app, very much looking forward to much-less-hampered play.
Best Strategy Card Battle App Available
Best game hands down. Cant wait for more expansions and decks. please please please give us more :).
Wish developer would make a few minor improvements for ipad. Game needs an attack all button for decks that amass creature cards. A better search library feature is needed IMO, when searching library for mana cards, it should just give you a color to tap instead of having to drag a card out of a row of 20-30 cards. Mitotic slime does not work properly. Cards that let you search your whole library/graveyard, need to display cards in stacks or columns instead of a row of 50+ cards, takes to long to search for what you need in most cases. The flick to play a card needs to be more responsive. Camera angle could be adjusted slightly for better targeting on flying creatures. When a card lets you select between players/creatures, you should just be able to tap the player avatar. Some cards do repeated damage to player or creature, and it slow the game down a lot when tapping creature or player menu, then tapping target. Should just be able to tap target :)
