Learning from a robot
Robot ABC is a learning game for children that teaches the ABCs by showing a page for each letter with drawings and audio. Each letter will have an item that will help the child remember what the letter is. The app is a good idea but there are a few flaws.
For one thing, the artwork is horrible. This is possibly partially intended to look like it was drawn by a child… but there are inconsistencies with resolution, size, pixilation, and drawing style. At least the pictures should stay consistent. The worst thing about the app is the robot voice – it is not a robot! It simply sounds like a human voice with a monotone nasally drone. But overall, I don’t think kids will really care, and most importantly it will improve their ABCs.
The human voice and robot voice were too much alike for my son who loves robots. While my kids generally love ABC apps (they already know theirs) they enjoy apps about them to see if new ways to sing or words to learn. Unfortunately they were not moved by this app however, a much younger child would enjoy. It's simple and easy to use. We were unable to hear jinxie sing the abc's though :-( I as a parent liked the fact you could print out a certificate for your child once ABC's are mastered along with coloring pages. I'd love to see some interaction with jinxie to engage a smaller child and maybe a chance for an older one to record their voice and hear it played back as/in a robot voice.
This app is nice for the 1-3 age range. The human and robot voices are nice and clear. Printing a certificate is a nice touch too. It would be a more versitile app if you could trace the letters with your finger and have them fill in with a color. It would also be nice if there was more than one word associated with each letter. If you want to appeal to a larger audience then perhaps having the robot react when you get the letter correct by having a record and playback so the child can repeat what is heard and once the audio is accepted as matching then the robot could respond....just a thought. All in all it is a nice first alphabet app.
