Description

In the old days man tried to catch a glimpse of the future in the strangest of ways.

Experience the ancient Swedish phenomena of year walking through a different kind of first person adventure that blurs the line between two and three dimensions as well as reality and the supernatural.

Venture out into the dark woods where strange creatures roam, on a vision quest set in 19th century Sweden. Solve cryptic puzzles, touch and listen in your search to foresee the future and finally discover if your loved one will love you back.

Mysteries and clues await everywhere in Year Walk, but to fully understand the events that took place on that cold New Year's Eve, you will have to delve deeper than the adventure and lose yourself between fact and fiction.

For the complete Year Walk experience, or if you're curious about the folk lore on which Year Walk is based, we recommend downloading Year Walk Companion, available for free on the App Store.

"An iOS game like nothing else you’ve seen on the format to date.
This is a brave and truly original work"
Edge - 9/10

"Elegant and artful, Year Walk is an unmissable piece of work.
You can close the app and put down the phone, but the forest may spread beyond its glassy confines, its spindly, silver-skinned trees taking root in your own home, your own dreams."
Eurogamer - 9/10

"A game this distinctive, this different, this thrillingly new is the best possible demonstration of the format’s versatility; indeed, of the narrative power of the interactive medium. Simogo has made something very special here."
The Telegraph - 5/5

"It's a gripping, somber, atmospheric, and elegantly-designed game, and everyone should play it.
I've never played anything quite like it."
Touch Arcade 5/5

"An incredible showcase for the potential of tablet games and will undoubtedly become influential over the next few years."
CVG - 9/10

"Simogo has packed Year Walk with a hefty share of spine-tingling jump scares, but it’s these external trappings that cause the game’s lore to get under your skin and stick with you long after your phone or tablet has been turned off."
Gamezebo - 4,5/5

"Year Walk is smart, thrilling, and absolutely stunningly crafted. It'll throw you for a loop, leaving you transfixed to the screen until you shake out all of its dark secrets."
Mac|Life - 5/5

"As with any good page-turner, you won't want to put this game down until you get to the end. It's quite a journey, too. Year Walk is a beguiling adventure, and a truly memorable experience."
Pocketgamer - 8/10

Customer Reviews

Mysterious, but not necessarily in a good way.

First, I successfully downloaded and installed the game, and had no crashes.

As everyone knows by now, the game has nice art, and an appropriately moody soundtrack. The game's big selling point is the atmosphere, and an unusual and interesting user interface.

That said, it's not much of a game. There's no instruction manual, no help screen, no FAQ. In fact, there's almost no information at all. So the user is faced with the task of solving each level with no clue as to what is supposed to be solved. There is no "find the gold key," or "talk to the tall man," or "find a way across the river." There are no clues nor even any suggestion as to what is supposed to be solved or what the puzzle is.

Worse yet, there's no connection between the solution and the goal. For example, it would be like having to figure out that seeing three rocks in the river means that you have to knock three times on the bridge in order to get a ghost to come out of a tree stump -- without any mention of rocks, bridge, stump, or ghost. I'm not kidding; it's really that obscure.

For people who enjoy that level of obscurity, I guess the game is enjoyable. I just found it irritating and frustrating. I guess there's also a story that's supposed to go along with it, but I have no idea what that is -- nor at this point do I care what it is.

So -- two stars for art and atmosphere, zero stars for the "game."

You who like to read reviews...

You wanna know when a game is good or not, worth the time or money. Well if you enjoyed games like LIMBO, BRAID, BADLAND, and DEADLIGHT on Xbox live. Well your not to far off with this game. It's touch and scroll puzzles. Not at all time consuming. It took me about an hour to beat the game as well as enjoy it thoroughly. To get the ENTIRE story you'll want to download the companion app which gives you further incite and much fuller appreciation for and to the story. Well worth the $3 to pay to play. Same as going to an arcade and spending .50 cents here and there for a quick thrill where as this provides a short story as well. When you scroll through here and see negative reviews. They were not patient... They were not here for a good story or to appreciate art and music. They went out on a limb to try it and they let themselves down with their impatience and lack of taste in the art of putting a game together. There is NO tutorial. Which means its a simple game. If you hate putting together 350 piece cardboard floor puzzles. This game isn't for you. It's largest requirement is NOT the money you pay for it. Patience is.

Great, Cerebral, High Tension

This game will have you holding your ipad a few extra inches away from yourself, in broad daylight, with an iron grip. Being in my mid-20's, I've seen a ton of horror movies and have played many video games, so trust me when I tell you this game gives you that "I'm not sure if I want to know where that trail of blood leads" type of suspense. The puzzles are a love letter to old school gamers who actually had to use their brains and a notepad to get over an obstacle. If you download the companion app (which you should), there are a ton of hints and clues between the lines that help you when some of puzzles leave you scratching your head. The graphics and sound are impeccable, and definitely add to the experience. The scares are well placed; when your nerves are twisted so badly that even though you KNOW something is going to happen, it still startles you. Although the play time is a bit short, it stays with you for days. You'll be recommending this game to anybody who's seen a horror movie or enjoys the Silent Hill franchise.
