DISCOVER NEW DEPTHS
Star Walk 2 is the first astronomy guide to introduce plausible three-dimensional models of planetary nebulae. Star groupings of the 88 officially recognized constellations are also presented in volume. You can see them as separate entities, turn them around and take a look from the other side. Complemented by articles on connected myths and history, this is the most comprehensive collection of information on constellations.*
REAL-TIME MOTION TRACKING
As you hold your phone up and point it towards the sky, Star Walk 2 follows your motions using the built-in gyroscope to match the map on your screen to the stars seen from your location. Easily find any star, constellation, or satellite in the sky by tapping Search. Star Walk will indicate the direction to look in.
NEW POINT OF VIEW
Unlike on a plain photograph, every star in Star Walk 2 has coordinates. That means you can look at objects, for instance, a constellation from any vantage point in space, not to mention the ultimate accuracy of your map for your exact location.
NOW AND LATER
Star Walk 2 gives you accurate daily data on current moon phase, time of sunset and sunrise, and elevation of planets. With just one slide you can see how the sky will look later tonight or throughout the year.
Special night-time soft red mode will help you preserve night vision when stargazing with a telescope. You can see the sky in X-Ray (and 5 more filters) to study the invisible structure of the universe. Live tracking for over 8,000 satellites will help you catch iridium flares, and detailed articles will satisfy the most curious inquirer.
What's New in Version 2.0.3
- compass calibration issue fixed
- Chinese translation fixed
NOT compatible with the iPod touch
Update: now it just crashes on load, so I can't even use as much of it as I could when I first wrote this. They continue to lie and say it's compatible with the iPod touch and it not only isn't, it CANNOT be. I continue to want my money back.
I have enjoyed the original StarWalk greatly, so when this came out I got it immediately, and bought the additional content too. Then I found out that it DOES NOT WORK WITH THE IPOD TOUCH 6 (or presumably any other version) because it cannot be calibrated; the compass icon doesn't appear, because the iPod has no internal compass. I contacted support and they ignored me. I'm not happy about that either.
So basically I wasted my money on a product that was advertised as working on my device but which in fact does not. If I'd bought it without knowing either way that would be one thing, but they specifically said it's compatible. The price of a cup of Starbucks coffee doesn't bother me; the fact that their support department didn't even bother to respond to my request does.
So if you have an iPod touch, do not get this app; you can't use it, nor get a response from the company.
Too annoying to use anymore
I've used this soon since it was first released. It was useful and not overdone. With each release, it's gotten progressively more gimmick-laden. I've watched the sky for over 40 years and memorized constellations decades ago, but even a beginning stargazer knows the correct orientation of Leo, Ursa Major, etc. The constellation figures are inaccurately placed with respect to the bright stars and look like they were drawn by someone who's really into Transformers. With all the flash (who needs a water effect for the horizon?), I find I never use the app anymore unless I turn all the useless options off first.
Most helpful .
A Must have app. For everyone who enjoys the open wonder of the night sky and just can't seem to be able to see its beauty because of the city lights. No matter what is in your way this app will allow you to see right through it all. To find the information on what you want to know. It's all there. Plus the app keeps updating so all of the info is fresh. I love the full version. Yeah it's a little extra but well worth it. !
