Description

A NEW ORIGINAL SERIES, NOW ON HBO.

Here is the first volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

A GAME OF THRONES

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from George R.R. Martin's A Clash of Kings and a preview of A Game of Thrones: The Graphic Novel.

From Publishers Weekly

Jun 07, 1999 – This narrative roils along a herky-jerky vector but remains always mesmerizing, as Harris's prose and insights, particularly his reveries about Hannibal, boast power and an overripe beauty. If at times the suspense slackens and the story slips into silliness, it becomes clear that this is a post-suspense novel, as much sardonic philosophical jest as grand-guignol thriller. Hannibal, we learn--"we" because Harris seduces reader complicity with third-person-plural narration--is not as we presumed. The monster's aim is not chaos, but order. Through his devotion to manners and the connoisseur's life, in fact to form itself, he hopes--consciously--to reverse entropy and thus the flow of time, to allow a dead sister to live again. He is not Dionysius but Apollo, and it is the barbarians who oppose him who are to be despised. Hannibal may be mad, but in this brilliant, bizarre, absurd novel--as in the public eye--he is also hero; and so, at novel's end, in blackest humor, Harris bestows upon him a hero's rewards, outrageously, mockingly.

Buyer beware

This is a fantastic read (at least the first three books which are clearly 5 stars) and you will get hooked on it, only to run of a cliff in book 4, it has been five years since Martin has delivered anything on this series and it doesn't look good for this year either and there are supposedly 2 more books to come. I wouldn't recommend for anybody to pick up this series unless it's completed, don't tale me word for it do your own research on the web...

Amazing Series

The first and third books of the Song of Ice and Fire series are shocking, brutal, taut and epic. The second and forth are "merely" well-written and engaging. Not too bad.

There are a lot of "Buyer Beware" comments due to the fact that GRRM has not completed the fifth book in the series (A Dance with Dragons). And while it has been a long (very long) wait, it's not like Martin has't been busy. He's completed (as editor) at least three compilations (to which he contributed stories). He's continued his highly successful Wildcards universe in two books. He's in the process of launching the Song of Ice and Fire comic adaptation. And, oh yeah there's this little HBO series you may have heard about (premiering in April 2011). That's not to say that the wait hasn't been difficult, especially for something as well written as this series (how long has it been since Jean Auel's last book?). BUT, the end is in sight...today (3/3/11), on GRRMs website, the publisher and editor announced a date for the publishing of A Dance with Dragons!!! 7/12/11!!!

If you've heard of the series (at this point because of the epic delay) and are interested, give it a try. If you're interested because of the HBO series, it's worth reading the original source material. If you're a fan of well written characters whose motivations are complex and mature than you owe it to yourself to read this series.

A Song of Ice and Fire manages to do something very few works of "fantasy" do: transcend the genre. At it is core, this is a story about family, choices, power and ambition and the things these characters will do to protect those things most important to them.

One of the best series ever

I'm a big fan. I came across this series a few years ago & fell in love. I don't have HBO but am thinking about getting it just for this series. I'm downloading the now so I can read them again.
