iTunes Review

Is it significant that Queen Latifah chose to use her real name in the title of her 2004 album? It might be her way of saying that her true identity is reflected in this collection of smoothly-sung jazz standards and pop tunes. In any case, she acquits herself well in the role of uptown chanteuse here. She doesn’t aim to impress with fancy vocal gymnastics; her singing teases and insinuates rather than overpowers. This approach works well on intimate tracks like “Simply Beautiful” (a duet with Al Green), “Lush Life” and “I Put A Spell On You.” She puts a sensual strut into her reading of “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and rides high upon the billowing melody of “Hard Times.” On “California Dreamin,’” she transforms a ‘60s folk-rock standard into a quiet storm of jazzy longing. Veteran arranger/producers Arif Mardin and Ron Fair are among those adding to the album’s polished sound. The Dana Owens Album offers an enticing re-introduction to a star already known to millions. Call her whatever you like — the Queen reigns on.

A Complete Reinvention

This is a huge turn around for Latifah. Her silly rap career has been bumped aside by this collection of sultry, sexy jazz, soul, and rock songs. This is a fantastic album complete with classics and lesser songs. Hard Times and The Same Made that Made Me Laugh showcase Latifah's fantastic voice (Who knew?) and California Dreamin' and I Put a Spell on You remind me of the old days. Queen Latifah, move over, Dana Owens is here.

Simply Beautiful...

Simply Beautiful is simply amazing! I hope Queen ventures more into this genre, since she's got so much talent and sooo much voice. Lush Life is a necessity, as far as I'm concerned, and Mercy just smokes. Queen Latifah fans - don't expect her typical hip hop, this is her voice doing some of those R&B's that just speak to the soul. Highly recommeded

WoW

Queen Latifah completely kills on this album. It is incredible. She has an incredible voice and the players with here are kicking. If you only get one song from this album though, get I Put a Spell on You. Latifah and HERBIE!! Killer song - tight album.

Biography

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Queen Latifah was certainly not the first female rapper, but she was the first one to become a bona fide star. She had more charisma than her predecessors, and her strong, intelligent, no-nonsense persona made her arguably the first MC who could properly be described as feminist. Her third album, Black Reign, was the first album by a female MC ever to go gold, a commercial breakthrough that paved the way for a talented crew of women rappers to make their own way onto the charts as the '90s progressed....
