Serpentine by Gillian Grassie

Buy this album immediately. Grassie has an amazingly unique sound. I can't get enough of this CD; it's like a breath of fresh air. This album will be one of your greatest investments. Grassie sings beautifully, and she has brought the harp to the 21st century. You won't be disappointed.

Gillian Grassie has a unique voice and style ...

"Serpentine" is really impressive, in the traditional sense of the term; it's left an imprint on me. Her music is completely unique; you take her music on her terms; she isn't derivative at all. Gillian knows what she wants to say and knows exactly how to say it. At an age (and in an age) when younger performers are either finding their style or - mostly - copying others', Gillian Grassie has already clearly established her sound and her voice. Gillian's voice is pitch perfect. She can really sing, her phrasing is unique and excellent; there is a Joni Mitchell influence, but it's just a starting point for what has become her own style. It starts in the modern-pop realm, but the head-spinning, confident vocals can swing like Joni's jazz moods as the instruments and sophisticated arrangements stay tight behind her. Her harp both blends with and backs up her voice and vision, while her lyrics show a keen intelligence and observation that avoid every songwriting cliche. As a listener, I'll add that the recording, production, arrangements and mastering are first-class and suit her music very well. It's just a great-sounding record. I'm putting it in with the Cool Women Singers section of my library, next to Lucy Kaplansky, Tori Amos and Sophie Hawkins.

This Kid Is Going to Be Big

I get to call her a kid becasue I have a daughter the same age. Although she's a resident of our area (Philadelphia), I only recently discovered Gillian ("pronounced "Jillian") Grassie's music. It is truly unique. Her classically-trained voice and shimmering harpistry blend beautifully, and her thoughtful and clever (and often funny, tempering the sadness that is frequently woven throughout) lyrics show a poetic maturity well beyond her early 20-something age. We also had the pleasure of hearing her perform solo last night, and enjoyed both the music and her engaging, funny and comfortable stage presence. If she pursues music as a career, I expect to one day say "I heard her when".
