Editors’ Notes

On her 1984 debut album, vocalist/pianist Diane “Deedles” Schuur triumphs from the start (a fluid, assured vocal delivery on the standard “The Very Thought of You”) to the end (a duo version of “Amazing Grace” with her on piano and coproducer Dave Grusin on keyboards). Deedles is both traditional, with a 20-piece string section, and contemporary-sounding, with electric bass throughout. Schuur’s career-long penchant for tackling the contemporary songbook is established here with a pair of numbers from the '70s: Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” (one of two tracks to feature her mentor, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz) and Jackson Browne’s “Rock Me on the Water.” It’s definitely an album of its time, with Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer and occasional Simmons electronic drums. But her effortless scat interpolating of the circus favorite “Entrance of the Gladiators” into Ellington’s “I’m Beginning to See the Light” is evergreen.

Diane's Amazing GRP Debut

What an opener! This cd contains well chosen songs delivered by Diane's most intimate vocal. Recorded in the eighties, this and all of Diana's early output was slightly marred by the heavy use of synthesizers used for cutting back production costs and to give a contemporary twist on standards. While the arrangements are now dated, Diane's vocal is unaffected. The first three tracks and the fifth track are standouts.

Great album

Bought this album as a cassette decades ago and recently digitized it so I could play it on my iPod and remembered what a great album it is and what a fabulous and unique vocalist Diane is.

Audio Reference Quality

Diane Schuur's voice is truly amazing! Stan Getz's sax arrangements are sublime.

I use this recording, especially "I'm Beginning to See the Light" and "I'm Just Foolin' Myself", to evaluate audio equipment. Phenomenal engineering and recording quality.

Diane Schuur, who has sometimes been on the periphery of jazz, balances her importance as a dedicated jazz singer with the inclusion of a large dose of pop tunes in her repertoire. Early in her career she had the tendency to screech in her upper register, but with maturity that flaw has largely disappeared and she has become a very impressive singer. Blinded at birth due to a hospital accident, Schuur (who would later be nicknamed "Deedles") imitated singers as a child. She had her first gig at a...
