Album Review

Priceless Jazz Collection is a budget-priced compilation that intends to give neophytes an affordable introduction to Johnny Hartman's Impulse! recordings. Although purists and collectors will find this sampler incomplete and inconsequential, it nevertheless gives new listeners a good idea of Hartman's music during the '60s by featuring such fine cuts as "Lush Life," "These Foolish Things," "They Say It's Wonderful," "I Just Dropped By to Say Hello," and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning."

Soooo Smooooooth

I love Johnny Hartmans voice, and only just learned of him a couple years ago. While watching the movie, Bridges of Madison County..Listening to the background music I realized I had not heard this crooner waited till the credits of the movie were past and saw Johnny Hartmans name next to some of the songs listed.. I now have some of his songs in my mix of< evening-down time favorites >.. how did I miss him for so long? I'm always adding more, can't get enough.

One of the best of the best!

My husband and I stumbled on Johnny Hartman's music while on a vacation that did not turn out all that well. That said, every time we hear Hartman's rich voice, we always say something like, wow - what a great gift that holiday gave us!

Johnny Hartman is in the tradition of the great romantic singers of the standards we love - and will never be repeated as our music becomes more remote and beat oriented. Every song makes you "swoon" in the best sense of the word - and brings back memories of a time gone by for young and old alike.

This album is also makes a great gift for anyone over 60 years old. Enjoy!

Though he was never the most distinctive vocalist, Johnny Hartman rose above others to become the most commanding, smooth balladeer of the 1950s and '60s, a black crooner closely following Billy Eckstine and building on the form with his notable jazz collaborations, including the 1963 masterpiece John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Born in Chicago, he began singing early on and performed while in Special Services in the Army. Hartman studied music while at college and made his professional debut in...
