Album Review

A byproduct of the bossa nova fad that followed the success of "Desafinado" (and preceded the famous recording Getz/Gilberto), this set finds Quincy Jones utilizing and exploiting bossa nova rhythms in his arrangements for a big band. The personnel includes flügelhornist Clark Terry, altoist Phil Woods, pianist Lalo Schifrin, guitarist Jim Hall, and (on "Soul Bossa Nova") the remarkable Rahsaan Roland Kirk. However, since the selections are all quite brief, and some of the charts are a bit cheesy and inappropriate for the gentle rhythms, this disc (although pleasant enough) is of lesser interest.

WOW, who knew that the Austin Powers theme song had already been composed by Quincy Jones himself in collaboration with composer-pianist Lalo Schifrin!...well, I didn't. But now that I do I am extremely pleased with the variety of bossa nova songs featured in this album such as "Samba De Uma Nota" and some new songs like "Lalo Bossa Nova" and "Boogie Stop Shuffle". ___-like bossa nova ___-like Quincy Jones + Lalo Schifrin *then buy the album...

Bossa Nova requirement

If you're one of those people who thought Austin Powers created Soul Bossa Nova, I weep for you. Although the Bossa Nova was most popular from 1958-1963, it's influence is still felt. Quincy Jones' genius comes through on this CD. Composing for a big band and making Bossa Nova work is a master feat. If you even dabble in jazz this is a CD to own. If you love Bossa Nova, it's a requirement.

Great Stuff

This album shows Jones' versatility and mastery, from the upbeat and tantilizing Soul Bossa Nova, To the suspenseful tone of A Taste of Honey, this album is top notch, this is what music should be. High Quality production, smooth sound, great for a lounge or personal listening.

And a quick look at a few of the artists Jones has worked with suggests the remarkable diversity...
