Album Review

The sequel to Nina Simone's Verve Jazz Masters, Vol. 17, Verve Jazz Masters, Vol. 58: Nina Simone Sings Nina features a selection of Simone's original songs, as well as her adaptations of jazz standards. Though jazz purists will find the sampler nature of this compilation a big maddening, the compilation nevertheless is useful for casual fans and neophytes, hitting many of her best-known songs, inlcuding "Sugar in My Bowl" and "The Last Rose of Summer."

It's not for everybody

This collection of songs by Nina Simone is not for everybody, but for the purist, the true fan of Nina Simone, this album is great. It gives the listener a view of Nina's personalities, in the plural. The songs survey Nina's push for Civil Rights and Equality, her stand for women everywhere, her gospel influences, and love. Don't be misled to believe this is an album with a political or social agenda, I don't believe it is. What I do think is that it's an album of Nina's soulful emotions, deep, bittersweet, sometimes angry and sometimes so tender. It takes the listener to wherever Nina wants to go - like it or not - and as for me, I like it.
