Album Review

Start by getting the hype out of the way: yes, she's a woman. Yes, she's strikingly beautiful. That said, look at the music: it's funky in a trippy, downtempo way, and even, at times, strikingly beautiful. With a DJ resumé that goes back to about 1993 — she's recorded under such names as 60 Channels and Jaz Klash — Angel has been a prolific producer, remixer, DJ, and even a film composer. This is a collaboration with a roster of vocalists that includes Navigator (of Freestylers), Divine Styler, Tre Hardson, and Mystic, among others, and while she keeps things mellow and easy throughout the program, there are lots of layers to pick apart and lots of deep, dark grooves to keep you gently swaying in your living room or driver's seat. Notable tracks include the eerie and periodically jungly "Selector," a great cameo by Divine Styler on "Act As If," and the gorgeous and multifaceted "Baltimore." There are two hidden tracks at the end of the program: an uncensored version of the album's lead track, "Make It Betta," and an alternate mix of "Destiny Complete." Highly recommended, and not just to those who think that gender matters.

No Gravity

I had never heard of The Angel until I listened to Mystic's Cuts For Luck, Scars For Freedom album. I'll be the first to admit, i wasn't fully impressed with the album, but the second time I listened to it, I was sucked right in. Baltimore is probably one of my favorite cuts currently, it's a great tune to drive to, relax to, and think to. Highly recommended album.

'Oh Baltimore'

Someone needs to put 'Baltimore' into 'The Wire' - The vibe of this song captures the depth of that show completely. The whole album has cinematic possibilities... those eclectic Angel flavours - all dubby, jazzy, experimental and moody. I think 'Strange Times' was the first downtempo track I came across that took an unexpected turn toward jungle... clever.

The Angel has always had that way of blending styles that captures all the flavors of urban music that I dig. Moody, evocative and ahead of it's time... this album features some of my personal favs on the mic like Mystic, Tre and Divine Styler. Selector is my joint both the og version on this album and the dnb remix. I'm still waiting on a new Angel album - Anytime soon?
