Album Review

The ultimate contemporary jazz hyphenate Russ Freeman (guitarist/arranger/producer/keyboardist/composer) became one of smooth jazz's most influential artists through magnificent projects like this one, chosen by Jazziz as the best contemporary jazz album of all time. This third Ripps release is a masterpiece of mouthwatering pop-jazz tunes, featuring strong hooks, gorgeous texturing, and styles ranging from tropical (the sunny "Aruba" featuring Rob Mullins on keys and Carl Anderson scatting away) and Brazilian ("One Summer Night in Brazil," Freeman's lush centerpiece) to soulful (a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together") and rockin' (the locomotive "Earthbound," which shows Freeman's strings at their frenzied peak). But there's more to the tourist story — there's also the bounce of bassist Steve Bailey, the boom of drummer Tony Morales, and the light exoticism of Steve Reid's soundscapes. The Rippingtons hit more peaks than valleys as the '90s unfolded, and Freeman expanded his scope beyond simple pop-jazz, but this one still sets the standard for smooth jazz.

Don't let the album cover fool you like it did me!!

When I first saw the album cover, I laughed and said "this album must have silly songs in it". But one day I decided to give "tourist in Paradise" a listen. Boy did I speak too soon!! Excellent contemporary jazz the way it used to be and not like it is now. Some of my picks include "Jupiter's Child", "Aruba!" and "One Ocean Way". This album must be in every smooth jazz fans collection!!

Tourist in Paradise

This is one of the best albums to date. I have every one of the Rippington's albums as well as Russ Freeman's Holiday and Drive. My favorites are Curves Ahead and Sahara. They are a must in the Rippingtons collection. Worthy of notice as well are Welcome to St. James Club, Wild Card and Russ Freemans solo album Drive. Although their latest 20th Anniversary collection was probably my least favorite, you still appreciate the talent that is displayed. You can't go wrong with the Rippingtons!

One of the most popular groups in what is loosely termed "contemporary jazz," the Rippingtons were formed (and have been led ever since) by guitarist/keyboardist Russ Freeman (no relation to the veteran West Coast bop pianist of the same name). Freeman (born February 11, 1960, in Nashville) studied at Cal Arts and UCLA, and recorded Nocturnal Playground as a leader in 1985 for the Brainchild label, a one-man project. In 1987, he was approached to record for the Japanese Alfa label and came up with...
