Album Review

An unusually successful pairing of Gabor Szabo with R&B legend Bobby Womack. Szabo digs deep into a soulful groove, inspired by Womack's silky-smooth originals. High Contrast features "Breezin," the Womack tune written especially for Szabo, which George Benson parlayed into a huge hit in 1976, and several tunes Womack popularized in the film Across 110th Street.

... on the basis of 'Breezin' alone, you should buy this album

Most people only know that George Benson popularized 'Breezin' back in the mid-70's and George did a nice job with it. That said, Gabor Szabo's version is bluesy and it has a nice funk feel underneath. Listen to Benson, then listen to Szabo - and I guarantee you will come back to Szabo's version everytime. It is really nice. I bought the this on vinyl many years ago and lost it along the way. It's great that it is available here now ... buy it, you won't be sorry. Too bad Szabo left us back in the 80's - he was a great player.

smooth as silk

Sadly this artist left us too early in the game. His music harkens back to the early days of that 60s rock driven by finesse with the electric guitar per se, and not the studio razzle dazzle upgrades and mixings. You can also feel the European roots of the music. Makes me feel like Prague in the late 80s, as the Iron Curtain was falling and the freedom of rock was leading the way. Good music.

I learned something today

I am one of those that thought George Benson was the original artist for "Breezin". Thanks iTunes for the clarification, and for the providing the original song. I love both versions. - SFR

Gabor Szabo was one of the most original guitarists to emerge in the 1960s, mixing his Hungarian folk music heritage with a deep love of jazz and crafting a distinctive, largely self-taught sound. Inspired by a Roy Rogers cowboy movie, Szabo began playing guitar when he was 14 and often played in dinner clubs and covert jam sessions while still living in Budapest. He escaped from his country at age 20 on the eve of the Communist uprising and eventually made his way to America, settling with his family...
