iTunes Review

No one marries romantic melancholy to an exquisite melody quite like Aimee Mann. After her hit-making years with 'Til Tuesday, she launched her solo career with 1993's Whatever, a richly bittersweet blend of poignant lyrics and exhilarating pop-rock. Mann's brilliant wordplay dissects heartache with raw honesty and scathing wit in "I Should've Known," "Stupid Thing", and "4th of July." She's equally effective with wry show-biz snapshots like "Put Me on Top" and "I've Had It." "Mr. Harris" and "Fifty Years After the Fair" strike a note of tenderness and nostalgia. Aiding Mann throughout is producer/guitarist Jon Brion, who embellishes the tracks with brightly Beatles-inspired sonic shadings. One of the truly essential singer-songwriter albums of the '90s, Whatever secured Mann's stature as pop's undisputed Mistress of the Minor Key.

superb

Aimee's first album and it was superb. It's got some great guitar riffs in there and some of the best craftmanship since the Beatles. It's brilliant, but then again, what else have we come to expect from Aimee?

One of the greatest of all

This is my favourite album and anyone I play it to falls in love with it as well. You can listen to it again and again and it never gets tired. Every song has a combination of lyrics and melody that more "celebrated" artists will never be able to match. Buy it and keep listening to it as it just gets better and better.

One of my all time favorite albums

Aimee Mann shows her range not only as a composer, but as a lyricist on this album. Her songs range from the simplicity of acoustic guitar, to one which might remind you of 60s "brit rock". This ranks as one of my all time favorite albums ever!

During the '80s, Aimee Mann led the post-new wave pop group 'Til Tuesday. After releasing three albums with the group, she broke up the band and embarked on a solo career. Her first solo album, Whatever, was a more introspective, folk-tinged effort than 'Til Tuesday's albums, and received uniformly positive reviews upon its release in the summer of 1993. However, the album was just a small hit, spending only seven weeks on the American charts, where it peaked at 127. Nevertheless, Whatever rejuvenated...
