Album Review

Say what you will about the lyrics, say what you will about heavy metal in particular; one thing that cannot be denied is that Finland's Children of Bodom can play their asses off. This is a band that not only understands but employs the entire history of metal into a bludgeoning but utterly polished and precise attack. Guitarists Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvala are a crushing attack of shred-worthy riffs and utterly magnificent fills and riffs. Jaska Raatikainen's drumming is so physically demanding and precise that it is almost inhuman. Janne Warman is the first metal cat in the post-black metal era to know how to use keyboards in a two-guitar band. There are no majestic flourishes here to tie him to prog rock; instead, he riffs, fills, and creates spiny backdrops for the other players to feed off of. And as a bassist, Henkka Blacksmith is the anchor, holding these flying, swirling, grinding, pummeling elements together. This double-disc set is the companion piece to the Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live DVD. There are 19 cuts taken from throughout the band's career. The sound quality is almost too perfect. Children of Bodom understand how important a show is in rock & roll and particularly in metal. They are far from their black and thrash metal beginnings in some ways — surely to the aggravation of purists (who are narrow-minded in any genre) — and have moved toward a category all their own. On disc one, check out the raging attack in tracks such as "Living Dead Beat" and "Silent Night, Bodom Night," and the textured but no less heavy dynamic approach of "Angels Don't Kill." On the second platter, scope out the guitar counterpoint in "In Your Face," the eerie frightwig muscle-flexing in "Lake Bodom," and the sonic assault of "Everytime I Die." Anyone interested in the history and development of heavy metal will find greatness in Children of Bodom. This set puts all of that on display. Those who wish the band had not progressed to this level of instrumental and songwriting sophistication will quickly claim "sellout," but then it's their loss. This baby rocks and rocks hard from start to finish. Long live the new metal.

best live album EVER

Wow, this is an amazing live album. Better than tokyo warhearts even! Unlike a lot of bands, COB can actually perform amazingly live and plus, they played just about all of their best songs. (It would've been even better if they played Children of bodom and children of decadence) This cd also includes an amazing drum solo by jaska, a cool solo by latvala and the 7 and a half minute dueling solos of alexi and janne. Each perfoormance is amazing, but if i had to pick the five best, it'd be this (in this order) 1 Hate Crew Deathroll 2 Hate Me! 3 Downfall 4 Needled 24/7 5 Everytime I die. Though out of thse five songs, HCDR is my least favorite, the live performance is just so amazing. The soft part when alexi sings wih the audience is amazing. However, the best part is the transition from the soft part, to the fast, heavy chorus at the end. If you don't buy the whole album, at least buy the song HCDR.

Awsome

I can not wait for this DVD, which hits stores in December, so I bought this Cd. The audio quality is superb and the playing is top notch as one would expect of COB. This is almost as good as the legendary Tokyo Warhearts Live Cd which in my opinion is one of the best live recordings ever. There are still the classic COB Guitar/Keyboard duels and an awsome solo by Roope Latvala. Definitly worth it to hold you over until there first ever DVD comes out.

Hot! Hot! Burning In-Your-Face!

Magnificent Fury! Way to go iTunes-----The Electricity of Live, and well recorded. Such Talent!

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Combining elements of melodic death metal, power metal, neo-classical, and thrash, Children of Bodom have been one of the world's most expansive and hard to define bands since their formation in 1993. Founded by lifelong friends Alexi Laiho (guitar/vocals) and Jaska Raatikainen (drums), the band originally formed under the name Inearthed. Along with bassist Samuli Miettinen, Laiho and Raatikainen mined their love of classic death metal for inspiration, channeling the aggression of bands like Entombed...
