iTunes Editors’ Notes
Having redefined ‘arena rock’ as a radio-friendly pop-infused effort with enough volume and aggression to keep Frisbees airborne with their first two 1977 studio albums, Midwestern favorites Cheap Trick needed an actual radio hit to legitimize their presence. “Surrender,” the opening cut of their third studio album, 1978’s Heaven Tonight, where the singer catches his parents making out on the couch to his Kiss records, distilled the group’s every ambition into four brilliant minutes, and the rest of the album holds its own. Producer Tom Werman expands the band’s attack with additional keyboards and a multitude of studio effects. A cover of the Move’s “California Man” acknowledges one of the group’s main influences; “On Top of the World” is a great tip of the hat to ELO. “High Roller,” “Auf Wiedersehen” and “Stiff Competition” showcase guitarist Rick Nielsen’s spectacular and self-effacing guitar hero poses with economical riffs that knowingly parody while also expanding the role for hard rock guitar players in bedrooms worldwide. The title track portends the atmospheric power ballad that would dominate the charts — without Cheap Trick — throughout the latter half of the ‘80s.
Customer Reviews
Cheap Trick...greatest band of all time?
The Beatles and the Who have a car crash baby of an album...this is amazing stuff here and I am not typing in jest. Robin Zanders soaring vocals can be beautiful one moment...then turn angry, sarcastic and quite simply just evil the next. Bun E. Carlos is the perfect quirky mixture of Keith Moon and Ringo Starr while providing the back beat and Tom Petersson lays down Paul McCartney and John Entwistle almost better than they do. Rick Nielsen cleverly crafts pop magic on par with any Beatles outing. Say what you like....but Cheap Trick may be the greatest band of all time. Even if they come in behind the Beatles and the Who...in this case three outta three aint bad.
SURRENDER
surrender is the best i love it
agreed, best ever
Greatest Cheap Trick album, The first band I was just totally into, you know the one's, you knew the release date of their upcoming album, and you had to have it that day. Take it home, listen to every song while studying the album cover and jacket. This album is THE reason I had to have every Cheap Trick album the day it came out. I'm downloading it now on my I-pod!
