70's Ghetto-Funk Country Western

As if this collection was not bizarre enough by itself, the much publicized physical abuse by Ike makes songs such as “Stand By Your Man’ even more ironic. Nonetheless, Tina pours her heart and soul, as well as her flava, into this collection of country standards. The standouts include the 70’s Ghetto-Funk version of Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man) where Tina takes the legendary song, once owned exclusively by Ms Lynn, and truly makes it her own. Moreover, The cover of “Stand By Your Man” is infinitely more ironic than Lyle Lovett’s version. Finally, Tina takes the Willie Nelson standard “Good Hearted Woman” to a level Mr. Nelson could never have anticipated. The addition of the Ikettes background vocals push the album past kitsch / camp into the realm of unclassifiable. For those of us old enough to remember K-Tel, what other record label could bring this to market. You’ll laugh; you’ll cry. You will be thoroughly entertained if you have an open mind.

Country Soul

I had never heard Tina sing country style. So, I listened to a few of the songs and decided to buy the whole CD. Well worth it.

Amazing Find

I just happened upon this and at first Stand By Your Man was a little shrill sounding, but listening to the other cuts, I was amazed. This is really good. Great soul spin to classic country standards, rivals Ray Charles doing country.

The most dynamic female soul singer in the history of the music, Tina Turner oozed sexuality from every pore in a performing career that began the moment she stepped on-stage as lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the late '50s. Her gritty and growling performances beat down doors everywhere, looking back to the double-barreled attack of gospel fervor and sexual abandon that had originally formed soul in the early '50s. Divorced from Ike in the mid-'70s, she recorded only occasionally...
