Album Review

This album gave the Count Basie Orchestra a rare chance to record an instrumental studio date in the late '60s. Arranger Sammy Nestico made his debut with Basie on this pleasant if unremarkable set of swingers and ballads. Tenors Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Eric Dixon (doubling on flute) are the standouts on this enjoyable session.

Basie Straight Ahead

I STRONGLY disagree with the album reviewer's "pleasant if unremarkable" statement above. Sammy Nestico is the quintessential jazz composer arranger and no one interpreted his work better than the great Basie Band. This album is a classic in every sense. Enjoy!

A Most Impressive Arrangement

Out of all the songs I have played in Jazz Band, my favorite songs would have to be the Count Basie songs, ESPECIALLY the ones arranged by Sammy Nestico. It just sounds awesome, and the keyings on the alto sax (lead alto sax) are just so perfect. (Perfect in the way that I couldn't imagine a composition with any different fingerings, it's that awesome.) I look forward to playing the Basie songs every year. Even though I've only performed three (Basie - Straight Ahead, Hayburner, and Splanky), I would have to rank all three of them in my top five favorite performance songs ever. Come on guys, Sammy Nestico is in frickin' Austin Powers. AUSTIN POWERS! You can't get cooler than being on Austin Powers.

One of the Best Jazz Albums

This great album ranks at the top of all Jazz albums, even with Consummation by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. It's up tempo (Hayburner, Magic Flea, Basie - Straight Ahead) and more relaxed songs (Lonely Street, It's Oh, So Nice) are the height of cool. Not "a" must have album, but "the" must have album that all jazz enthusiasts need. Count Basie & His Orchestra at their finest.
