iTunes Review

After the breakout popularity of their self-titled major-label debut, Hoobastank returns with a similar, if tighter, set of songs on their second release. Along with the crunching guitar riffs and a fully loaded rhythm section, there’s extra attention paid this time around to the big, impassioned voice of singer Doug Robb, whose vocals rip through the mix with crystal clarity. Similarly, the vocal harmonies also receive some nice studio sheen, and the good backup singing sweetens the already strong melodies. With “What Happened to Us?,” “Lucky,” and the hit single “The Reason,” the band shows more subtlety and range than on its debut, and these (relatively) slower moments help to play up the attack of loud rockers like “Out of Control” and “Let It Out.” The Reason proves to be a solid sophomore effort.

Perfect Album . . . If Only . . .

You see, there are some flaws with this album, but there are also many more things to cover them up quite nicely. Flaw #1: A lot of the songs are about the same topic, although I can relate to the topic they chose (loving somebody and/or you want to tell them how you feel/doing anything you can for someone/missing someone, etc.) Flaw #2: Songs like "Out of Control" would be absolutely *TERRIFIC* if they'd keep the scream-factor down! Now, for the numerous pro's: 1) Original lyrics - they aren't cliché and the lyrics are heartfelt and original. They are also very well-planned, not slapped together like some other albums. 2) The lead singer can actually *SING*!: Many bands have singers that are unable to seem, but this is not the case with Hoobastank. The lead singer rox! 3) "The Reason" is the most worthwhile song you will ever listen to: a genuine message, a satisfyingly logical and aestheitcal chord progression, original yet predictable lyrics (in the *GOOD* way, a.k.a. you find yourself singing to the song before you even know the words), and a soothing yet powerful lead singer to back it all up. Add in some killer harmonies and you've got the most deserving chart-topper there ever was! Hoobastank is a truly original and inspirational band out there and they're a pleasure to listen to; now they just need to release another album! Among the best songs in this album are: 1) The Reason 2) Never There 3) Escape 4) Let it Out 5) Out of Control Plus *MANY* more but these are my top five ^^ The album is not only cheap, but it is *COMPLETELY* worthwhile despite its flaws! Check it out and buy the *WHOLE* thing!

A-

These guys are good! I bought their latest album a year ago, and i love them, the singer has a REALLY good voice. The music is very unique, (especially their songs "Unaffected", "Out of Control" and "The Reason"),and they're not like those poser punk bands like Simple Plan or Blink-182. I would REALLY recomend this album to anyone. Its worth the money. Believe me, I may be 17, but i have a very good taste of music.

Great album

Hoobastank is one of my favorite bands today and their music always fills me with the energy to start my day. This album is great and none of the songs are bad. I highly recommend The Reason,

Biography

Formed: 1994 in Agoura Hills, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

While the heavy alternative sounds of Tool and Alice in Chains were primary influences on Hoobastank's sound, the post-grunge quartet tempered the gloomier elements of such music with a suburban California groove and an eye for accessibility. Formed in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills in early 1994, the band's earliest members were vocalist Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin, who met each other at a high-school battle of the bands competition. The two chose to join forces, adding bassist Markku...
