Editors’ Notes

Jackie Wilson was a troubled kid who later became one of the most charismatic performers to ever touch a stage. This well-curated set is a ticking timepiece that captures “Mr. Excitement” in the evolution of R&B, soul, and rock ’n’ roll. And the musical arc here is dramatic: from the rat-a-tat attack of the Berry Gordy–penned 1957 hit “Reet Petite” (Wilson’s first post-Dominoes solo single) to his 1967 smash “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” to his 1968 soul-chill revision of “For Once in My Life” to “Nobody but You,” a gospel lifter off his 1976 final album.

Customer Reviews

Excellent Singer! One of Elvis' favorites.

I love Jackie Wilson. I love Elvis Presley. To the guy who said it was a shame that Elvis ripped Jackie Wilson's style off... Elvis was a huge Jackie Wilson fan and there's a big difference between "ripping someone's style off" and being influenced by another artist. Music is all about inspiring each other. Think before you bash Elvis who, like Jackie Wilson, will also always be one of the greatest singers who ever lived.

Great Album

Firstly, saying Elvis ripped off Wilson's singing style is a lie. One, Elvis was making his legendary Sun recordings before Wilson ever recorded, and next Wilson never recorded the differsity of music Elvis did, like country and gospel. Lastly, I don't think it is possible to rip off a style, either you can do it or not. There are other endless points to make on this. All that being said Jackie Wilson was one of the all-time greats, and maybe the least recognized truly great singer ever, and this album is a great proof of that, all Elvis haters aside.

Titan of Soul

I love Jackie had the most powerful voice. It is sad to people like Elvis rip his singing style off. You must buy Danny Boy, Over the Rainbow, No Pity, Georgia On my Mind, Nobody but You. These songs showcase his powerful operatic tenor which can reach the soprano range. He is the best so lets show him some respect.

Biography

Born: June 9, 1934 in Detroit, MI

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s

Jackie Wilson was one of the most important agents of black pop's transition from R&B into soul. In terms of vocal power (especially in the upper register), few could outdo him; he was also an electrifying on-stage showman. He was a consistent hitmaker from the mid-'50s through the early '70s, although never a crossover superstar. His reputation isn't quite on par with Ray Charles, James Brown, or Sam Cooke, however, because his records did not always reflect his artistic genius. Indeed, there...
