Cellist Akua Dixon is at the intersection of jazz and classical on her self-titled second recording, arranging a variety of standards for a string quartet with other players augmenting at times. “Haitian Fight Song” opens as one of the album’s grandest statements with a dense mélange that captures the teeming energy of Mingus’s original. While Dixon shines as a soloist on “Alone Together,” her arrangements are filled with clave on “A Gozar Con Mi Combo” and swing hard on “Poinciana.” Those looking for classical fare can turn to lovely versions of “Moon River” and the always-passionate “Libertango.”
