Editors’ Notes

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian institution. He has performed at Toronto's venerable Massey Hall more than any other artist (150 times as of 2011), and this collection celebrates both Lightfoot's and the Hall's longevity. Collected from soundboard tapes recorded at Lightfoot concerts between 1998 and 2001, All Live is the purest look yet at Lightfoot's peerless talents. Nothing has been touched up; nothing has been remixed. These are the performances as they were heard in the esteemed Hall. Lightfoot's in fine voice, and the track selection is a healthy mix from his entire catalog, from "Early Morning Rain" and obvious hits such as "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "Canadian Railroad Trilogy," and "Sundown." Lesser-known tunes like "Fine as Fine Can Be" and "Song for a Winter's Night" also appear. Lightfoot's a master, and his rich sense of melody matched with his golden, honeyed vocal timbre makes anything he sings worth hearing.

Finally, live...

I grew up with Gordon Lightfoot. He is uncategorizable. Beyond description. In his own musical world. And he shares it with us. Thank God for Gord. I'm incredibly excited we have a rare live album. He makes me feel like I'm 13 again, listening to Old Dan's Records in our old Chevy Blazer.

Outstanding! Gord still has the gold!

Love Lightfoot Live

If you've ever seen Gordon Lightfoot live, you know what a solid performer he is. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. After all these years, and through some health issues, he's still got it.
This CD showcases his live performance. Smooth as silk. If I have one beef with it, it is that it is missing two of my personal favorites which he usually includes in his live performances, "Softly" and "Beautiful". But he has such a great catalogue if terrific songs, I guess it's too much to expect all of them.

One of the leading singer/songwriters of the 1960s and '70s, Gordon Lightfoot was Canada's most successful contemporary folk artist, establishing himself as an important songwriter in the mid-'60s and going on to become a major international recording star in the following decade. Lightfoot's songs are literate but down to earth, and deal with personal matters as well as global issues in a manner that's poetic yet accessible, and his rich, strong voice is a superb vehicle for his material, though...
