Album Review

Young singer Grenique layers her debut with vocals that are soulful yet subtle, with a neo-classical soul sound true enough to capture your attention but not overtake you. From the ethereal rhythms of the title track, to the jazz-spiced remake of Heatwave's "Star of a Story," this album is piled with soothing, earthy music. Grenique's vocals recall vintage Chaka Khan, especially the catchy "Let Go," with shades of Dionne Ferris. Although her sound isn't as distinctive as Erykah Badu's, she'll surely draw comparisons to the trend-setting singer since they share the same producer, (Kedar Massenburg) and spiritual leanings.

Before her time!

This CD came out 8 years ago and it could be on the radio today! I just started "digging in the crates" and re-discovered one of my favorite CDs. She got no airplay (except for KJLH in Los Angeles---where I originally heard it). This is unfortunate becasue she has a voice that is strong enough to last. I wish this could be re-released...she could give Jill Scott a run for her money!!!!

I truly view this work as a classic in all my collections. Not many know of her because she did not get much exposure but the album gets regular playtime with me. It seems the world has slept on Grenique but I can honestly say that I did not hesitate to purchase this album the year of its release after my very first preview. I have bought the cd several times after losing it more than once. But now I have Itunes! Everyone I have put up on this cd loves it! I wish I knew why she has not returned! It is "a must have" for real music and R&B lovers! Grown folks music!

In 1999, My British pen pal made me a tape with songs from her too favorite artists - Craig David and Grenique. I still remember the moment i heard her voice, so soothing, sentimental and unique. I was blown away. I went to search the internet and ordered copy from Amazon, the last one of the two copies available at the time, right away. It's been almost 9 years, I still listen to this CD from time to time and I still love it. It is timeless She is such a takented singer and probally one of the most underrated singers. So sad, that her career did not take off after this albumn. I would recommend anyone who are into neo-soul. I actually prefer her over Erykah Badu. I love every song in this album. My favorite is " Let go" "Should I"

Years Active: '90s

Soulful singer/songwriter and Maryland native Grenique grew up in a distinctively creative and musical family: her poet mother and percussionist father gave her the name Grenique because her father's name is Greg, and her mother knew she would be unique. They also gave her a thorough background in jazz and soul music, leading her to absorb elements of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Phyllis Hyman, Cameo, and Chaka Khan into her own approach. Grenique began performing with vocal groups as a teen...
