In this world that our human bodies congregate and make sense of it all, I feel that the most sensitive and exquisite breath that is able to interlace with the precious pure air (that we cleave to by luck still) is carried out by Chris Connor’s vocal strength. She reminds us with her vocal cords that our biological ability should be naturally coupled with a spiritual and thoughtful emotion that uplifts our human existence.

Along with June Christy, Helen O'Connell, and Julie London, Chris Connor epitomized cool jazz singing in the 1950s. Influenced by Anita O'Day, the torchy, smoky singer wasn't one for aggression. Like Chet Baker on the trumpet or Paul Desmond and Lee Konitz on alto sax, she used subtlety and restraint to their maximum advantage.
