iTunes Editors’ Notes

With that Harley Davidson and crucifix juxtaposed on the cover of Brantley Gilbert’s Halfway to Heaven, it’s safe to assume that sin and redemption play a recurring theme on the country rocker’s sophomore long-player. “Hell On Wheels” kickstarts the album with snarling guitar and backwoods banjo accompanying Gilbert’s smoky rasp. “Bending the Rules and Breaking the Law” aims for outlaw anthem status as does the simmering “Country Must Be Country Wide,” where he name-checks “Cash, Hank, Willie and Waylon” – though it’s the harder rocking “Kick It In the Sticks” that sounds more convincing. Gilbert still sounds rough around the edges on the slow-burning ballad “My Kind Of Crazy,” where he romantically pines for a gal who seems more high maintenance than a V-twin engine.

Customer Reviews

Love it!!!

I listen to whole album over and over again.. I've seen him in concert and have been a fan of his for a long long time!! You can not go wrong with this album!!! He's exactly what country music is about!!

Not a Fan

Just not a fan of Brantley... I think he sounds like he's trying to hard. I think if you have to sing about how country you are, you're really not country. Even his voice sounds like he's trying to sound all gritty and full of emotion, but I'm just not buying it.

Exactly what Country Music needed!

Brantley Gilbert is exactly what Country Music needs right now. I've been a fan of B.G.'s for a couple of years and I'm really excited to see people finally starting to take notice of him. If you like great country music and southern rock- buy this album you'll love it! I'm so sick of hearing country music that sounds like pop. I want to hear real country music like the stuff on Halfway to Heaven! I love this cd!!!

Genre: Country

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Although it's tempting to call Brantley Gilbert a country artist — he certainly embraces the outlaw country side of things — in many ways his music is closer to the heartland sentiments of artists like John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, and perhaps most apt, Steve Earle. Gilbert was born in the small town of Jefferson, Georgia, just outside of Athens. He grew up hearing country music, but he also listened to a lot of Athens rock bands like R.E.M. and the B-52's, plus the swaggering Southern...
