iTunes Editors’ Notes

Midnight Oil had long been fueled by politics as much as music, so it was no coincidence that its best album of the '80s was linked to its most important social cause. Diesel and Dust was inspired by the Oils’ 1986 tour of the Australian outback, which opened the band’s eyes to the struggles of the country’s Aboriginal population. The hit single “Beds Are Burning” was a passionate call to social justice and the decade’s catchiest song about decolonization. “The time has come—a fact’s a fact,” sings Peter Garrett on the verse. “It belongs to them—let’s give it back.” While some critics took issue with the idea of a white band singing from the indigenous perspective, one has to credit Midnight Oil for its courage. At a time when the Aboriginal plight was largely ignored by most Australians—and practically invisible to the rest of the world—the band demanded the notice of the entire pop-music market. On this album, most of the attention went to strident anthems such as "Beds Are Burning," “Bullroarer,” “Sometimes,” and “Dreamworld,” but the group’s raw nerve is best seen on the slow-burning “Arctic World.”

Classic

Every now and then comes a record that is pure and genuine. The passion oozes out of Peter Garrett into the airwaves. Distinctly Australian it addresses the topic in a bold and uncompromising manner. The authenticity and raw sound make this an essential to any music lovers connection. If catchy songs and honest, direct, impassioned lyrics are up your alley then go ahead and make that purchase. This record belongs in the same breath as London Calling, Nevermind, and Purple Rain.

Brilliant beyond words!!!

Dreamworld. Listen to the lyrics. It is as relevant today as it was 21 years ago. This is always a sign of how important music is to the world. How Peter Garrett was tied into a consciousness that only people with passion and insight can tap into. He spoke the truth about government, war and politics in a way that very few vocalists can. Arctic World is another song that simply send chills through my spine. It's been far too long without Midnight Oil on Itunes. Finally.

FINALLY!

I've been WAITING for this to show up on ITUNES! It's about time! Thanks!!

Australia's Midnight Oil brought a new sense of political and social immediacy to pop music: not only did incendiary hits like "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine" bring global attention to the plight of, respectively, aboriginal settlers and impoverished workers, but the group also put its money where its mouth was — in addition to mounting benefit performances for groups like Greenpeace...
