iTunes Review

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis, Sony-Legacy presents this expanded legacy edition of the complete concert at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis on March 20, 1974. It features songs left off the original album and a complete remix and remaster of the tapes. In addition, a recording of Elvis’ complete concert “test run” at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va., on March 18, 1974, was recently located; it was found to be in mono and dubbed with the reverb that Elvis preferred. The bonus material concludes with five tracks cut at RCA Studios in Hollywood on Aug. 16, 1974, which had been intended as reference recordings for his upcoming Las Vegas performances where he was to perform these new songs. Despite Presley’s higher concert profile in the '70s, the original 1974 Memphis recordings were his homecoming; he hadn't performed there since 1961. This appears to have lit a fire under Presley, since he and his band are clearly playing with serious intention.

So glad this one has been released. The original got on my nerves. For some reason Felton Jarvis thought he needed to add audience applause all throughout the songs. In strange places. It was very obvious. This album has none of that. Plus, all the songs that RCA made them leave off. Due to the fact that certain ones were repeats from other live albums. Makes sense but here you get to hear Polk Salad and several others. Again Elvis delivers.

Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th century popular music. Not necessarily the best, and certainly not the most consistent. But no one could argue with the fact that he was the musician most responsible for popularizing rock & roll on an international level. Viewed in cold sales figures, his impact was phenomenal. Dozens upon dozens of international smashes from the mid-'50s to the mid-'70s, as well as the steady sales of his catalog and reissues since his death...
