Album Review

A ten-track sampling of the career of Latin jazz tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri, demonstrating his range from passionate South American melodies to his later easy listening jazz interpretations. Part of the Verve Finest Hour series, this well-presented album is a fine introduction to the artist at an affordable price.

Gato Barbieri's Finest Hour

My sis introduced me to Gato and since then I am totally hooked on "Europa" what a beautiful song. I plan to walk down the aisle to it this summer .

He's the best

I was turned on to Caliente in 1979 by a friend in Connecticut. We both went out and rented Alto saxophones because of that album, and really stunk it up ;-). Of course, Gato only plays Tenor, and no one in the Tenor world has ever gotten to the level of Gato. I mean the pure destruction of a reed. He kills it and his arrangements always include incredible world-class percussionists. We are lucky to be living now, to hear him live. Listen to all the Gato you can and do it with headphones on. Then, you'll truly understand his greatness. Anyone who has ever played a saxophone understands.
