Album Review

Daria shows off her versatility throughout this diverse set, with each selection being radically different than the one before. She displays expertise on the standard "All or Nothing at All," some world music, a Latin jazz piece, Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and the 7/4 "Feel the Rhythm," and those are only the first five selections. The music crosses many stylistic boundaries but Daria excels in each setting. It is also nice to hear some spots for Marc Russo, the former saxophonist with the Yellowjackets, on alto and soprano. The charming closer, "Dreams of a Tango" (with Rich Kuhns on the bandoneon), is one of the high points of this excellent release.

one of the Bay Area's best singers

Daria's beautiful pipes and rhythmic range are a delight on her full-length debut. I love her interpretation of "Sunshine of Your Love" -- its combination of introspective feeling and tremendous strength, as she transforms a tune that seemed so masculine with her refreshing take on it as a woman. Another showcase for her rich musical sensibility and vocal power is a new version of Sting's "Fragile." Wonderful players include Bay Area treasure the drummer Paul van Wageningen. Crisp, tapestried, and always tasty production by Wayne Wallace and Frank Martin.
