Moving Music

The synclavier pieces here are really excellent, and that's coming from someone who tends to lose interest in that side of FZ. Add some stellar tracks from the '88 tour and Frank's sardonic wisdom on American politics (very, very timely), and this is a solid entry. Well done, FZT, a welcome distraction from the drama and doing what's it's all about: the music.

WHY?

This album should be called "We're Only In It For The Money" - not because it sounds anything like that album but because there is absolutely no reason for this album to ever see light of day. Again, the family trust (now overseen by Ahmet), seems to be interested in putting out anything with Frank's name on it to make a buck from the hard core fans. (let's face it, Frank's music even during the 60's and 70's, while great for the most part, were never big money makers.)

This has two synclaiver pieces on it, "Overture to 'Uncle Sam'' and "Medieval Ensemble", that time in at about half the length of the album. There's a couple of interesting spots in the songs but I just was never a fan of his synclavier music.
"Brown Shoes Don’t Make It (Remix)" is a great remix of the song, similar to the quality of redoing the songs that were done so well on "Lumpy Money". Sound quality is outstanding.
"Amnerika (Vocal Version)" was an instrumental - now it has vocals. No big deal.
“If I Was President…” is Zappa talking about being president with some music thrown in. Watch his appearance before Congress from the Censorship hearings some 30 years ago---much more interesting.
"When the Lie’s So Big (Live)" and "America the Beautiful (Live)" are cuts taken from his '88 band (one of his best bands he ever assembled) but besides trying to (loosely) follow the theme of this album, there's not much reason for their inclusion here. They would have fit in nicely on "Broadway The Hard Way" or "Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life" but here, they just sound like thrown in after thoughts.

If Ahmet and Joe Travers were trying to make a statement about the political scene of today, their are plenty of songs that they could have chosen from Frank's back catalog to make the point. Clean up the sound quality, like they did on "Brown Shoes Don't Make It", and make a coherent statement through the music.

Again, as this effort stands, there is absolutely no reason for this release except to cheat the hard core Zappa fans out of their money. Even being to download this for free, I won't be doing it.
(1 star for the "Brown Shoes Don’t Make It (Remix)" - it's great)
