Editors’ Notes

It’s fitting in a music-business kind of way that Van Morrison’s first solo album after leaving the Belfast, Ireland–based R&B band Them would be something he knew nothing about. He’d been cutting sessions with songwriter/producer/manager Bert Berns in hopes of putting together his sound when Berns decided they had enough for an album, since “Brown Eyed Girl” was faring very well as a pop single. Over the years, endless permutations of these sessions have appeared. The three best are The Bang Sessions (which includes nearly everything) and Blowin’ Your Mind! and T.B. Sheets (which for many years were the only albums available from this era). This edition of Mind adds five alternate takes of the songs. Since Van is such a master of vocal phrasing and performance, it’s a valuable music lesson to hear the alternate takes. Of the originals, “He Ain’t Give You None” (this original version got switched out for an alternate take on The Bang Sessions) and the extended blues “T.B. Sheets” are particularly enlightening.

Van Morrison Is The Best

I have always been inspirationalized (It think I just made up that word) by Van Morrison. For a long time I have listened to his stuff, and I saw that there were no reviews. Buy the album. Now.

buy the V. Morrison "Bang Masters" on itunes instead

This record (is amazing for starters, but ) is a re-issue of a re-sissue of songs. This identical collection of songs plus a few others are all available on the "Bang Masters" album. There are some great original liner notes to the Bang Masters album by Bill Flanagan, if you can find them. The price of the records (on itunes at least) is the same too. All of that aside this is an unbelievably great set of early V.M. recordings. T.B. Sheets alone is worth the price of admission.

One word "Brilliant"

Amazing debut album!

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected...
