One chapter opens as another ends....

In only a way that a masterful songwriter can accomplish , Glen Phillips has managed to capture the emotion of his own life experience to create music with universal meaning and substance. The album combines heartfelt sorrow with the hopefulness of learning to live life with a new appreciation and simplicity. Musically , there are some surprises on this album, there are a few songs that have a much more "symphonic" feel than previous albums. Overall, I loved the musical diversity of the songs , the harmonies with the female singers on the tracks , and the fact that he managed to keep the clever songwriting despite the heavy feel of some of the songs . This will be one of those albums that true Glen Phillips fans will delight in listening to over and over again !

Phenomenal, honest songwriting.

This is how singer/songwriter albums should be. Super honest and raw. Glen is a master songwriter. The experience he creates for the listener is nothing short of miraculous.

Grief and Praise

You don’t have to know the details of Glen Phillips’s personal life to appreciate the momentous shifts behind the music on this record. There are lighthouses flickering over rocky shores, people swimming into the tide, coming to the hard recognition that surrender is sometimes braver than struggle. A record written in the midst of life’s ground shaking can turn out bleak, and there are bleak moments here. But what’s so heartbreaking and astounding is the beauty running through it at the same time. “I'm still dreaming of your eyes, your mouth, your touch / but I won’t have another wreck upon my watch.” The album is a dance of grief and praise—never just one, but both at the same time. The two sway back and forth, bow and bend and intertwine. It’s remarkable that way, not unlike life itself.
