Schmidt is one of the undiscovered gems that most should encounter during their Mahler phase. His symphony's are fabulous[his 4th is a masterpiece-his 1st is one of the best "firsts" I can think of. He is kind of like a Brahms of the romantic period. This period saw the explosion of the german symphony-its peak really[also see Karl Weigl]. Both pieces on this disk reveal that Schmidt was far more than just a big writer, he could also produce brilliant smaller works. I think anyone who in familiar with the majority of his oevre would be hard pressed to call him anything less than a master.
