One city, two fine orchestras
These 1988 performances from Bratislava in the Czech Republic feature the city's two fine orchestras. The CSR Symphony plays Beethoven's Eroica Symphony with fleet tempos, lean and clear orchestral texture--qualities I like. The Slovak Philharmonic plays Schubert's Unfinished Symphony beautifully. Recorded sound and orchestral balance are excellent in both performances except that the trumpets are not audible enough in the Beethoven. With both orchestras, conductor Michael Halasz and the orchestral players let the very great music speak directly to us, and the results are very satisfying.
