John Field - A Happy Discovery

Naxos continues to surprise me with the recordings they produce and the amazing prices at which they offer them. Don’t let the price scare you away either, the quality of the playing and the stunning music is worth three times the amount you will pay. John Field (1782-1837) was a composer I was not familiar with, but a friend suggested I have a listen and I was blown away by the beauty and charm of this piano music. I suggest you Google his name, as John Field was a very interesting man and the creator of the Nocturne. The music itself is beautiful, playful at times and it is expressively performed by the pianist Benjamin Frith with David Haslam & Northern Sinfonia. The music is enhanced by a terrifically recorded disc.

Frith tied for first place in the 1986 Concorso Busoni and took top honors in the 1989 Artur Rubinstein Piano Competition. In 1992 he made a big impression at the Edinburgh Festival with Beethoven's Diabelli Variations; this led to his first recording, made for ASV. Frith tours all over the world...
