The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra dates back to 1906, and is Australia's longest-running professional orchestra. Consisting of 100 players, the orchestra was founded by conductor Alberto Zelman. It became one of the radio orchestras of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (now Australian Broadcasting Corporation) in 1934, and in 1945 was renamed the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, only to revert back to the name Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1965.
