Customer Reviews

Not exactly music in the strictest sense -

These are not complete pieces. When heard as on this album, they are essentially a collection of repetitive, mildly interesting musical vignettes. I think the worth of this album is not in the interpretation (there really is none) or in the music (These ideas are musical, and at times interesting, but to call these exercises cohesive pieces of music is probably going far too far), but primarily as a reference. If you are learning these exercises and need a demonstration of how they sound, this is great. Would I play it in the background while reading or working? Absolutely not. If you're buying this, you're buying it to listen fairly attentively, because it really has little value as an expressive work.

That being said, I think this album was probably made by people completely aware of this. It is good for what it is, and what it is is a bunch of piano exercises that challenge and strengthen the pianist, but... well... don't do a whole lot for the casual listener at all. If you're a casual listener, Brahms' other piano works are beautiful pieces, and I recommend you start with them.
