Possibly the greatest guitarist alive today.
Dimitri Illarionov is one of the greatest guitarists alive today, and this album does a brilliant job of showcasing that. "Preludio" is a beautiful piece that show's how masterful Illarionov is at interpreting pieces; the piece sounds Romantic, but his playing lacks Romantic excess, such as too much rubato or having an overly warm and rounded tone. Julian Bream once said that the guitar is "orchestral" in it's variety of tones. Illarionov proves Bream correct with "Grand Overture, Op. 61" and his ability t make the guitar sound like a small orchestra. One of the highlights of the album is the Roland Dyen's composition "Valse En Skai" which is a showcase of Illarionov's intimate understanding of the sounds available to a guitarist. He is able to pull out tones ranging from nasally sul ponticello to warm and round sul tasto, not to mention he can pull off difficult harmonics and make them shine. Every track on this album is a brilliant showcase of Illarionov's extraordinary level of skill and craft on his instrument. I highly recommend this album for any serious guitar lover.
