Intelligent and fun interpretations of Dufay

Dufay is one of the great composers of secular chansons; "Vergene bella" and "Adieu ces bons vins..." are on my top ten list of favorite songs by anyone, anywhere, from any period. And Ensemble Unicorn is one of the best interpreters of Dufay that I know. They steer confidently between the two perilous extremes of modern-day treatment of secular chanson, singing like drunken RenFest roisterers on one hand, or like pious choirboys and girls singing for a bunch of stiff-backed prelates. Which is to say that their treatments are energetic and rhythmically exciting without ever becoming vulgar or show-offy. They pay attention to the meaning behind the lyrics, with excellent phrasing. The chansons are backed by skillful performances from an instrumental mixed consort.

Great intro to secular Renaissance music.

I listened to samples of many Renaissance composers, and the only one I liked consistently was Dufay. I found many of the sacred writers too highbrow (and occasionally annoying) for my taste and wanted a good mix of secular vocals and instruments. This is it. Very catchy secular songs, artistically excellent yet emotional vocals, and the whimsical, energetic buzzing of period instruments such as the shaum and sackbut. Dollar for dollar this is probably the best intro to secular renaissance music you will find on iTunes.
