Blackwood's Microtonal Etudes were a revelation for me and, I suspect, a lot of other listeners. Jarring at first impression, one soon learns to listen to the unusual tunings and finds they make as much sense as our accustomed 12-equal. Far from being the painful avant garde exercise one might expect, these are beautiful little pieces of music, influenced more by Bach and Chopin than by 20th century academics. I return to this album time and again for the pure enjoyment of it.
