iTunes Review

Formed in Virginia way back in 1984, GWAR has long been assaulting listeners with wildly over-the-top super-metal and insane, performance art–heavy live shows complete with outlandish Mad Max–meets–Rawhead Rex costumes, political effigies, mock executions, and countless gallons of fake body fluids. Battle Maximus is GWAR's 13th full-length album and the first since the untimely passing of lead guitarist Corey Smoot/Flattus Maximus in 2011; he's been replaced by Brent Purgason from Cannabis Corpse. Though GWAR has been around for nearly 30 years and weathered many personnel changes, it's remained loyal to its original sound, thankfully never updating for the times or trying to adapt to new trends. Slashing guitars, machine-gun drums, and shouted/growled vocals dominate, with mutilation-heavy imagery in no short supply. Check out "Madness at the Core of Time," "Raped at Birth," "Triumph of the Pig Children," and "I, Bonesnapper."

Great album

I didn't know where this album would go after losing Cory, but they really stepped up their game. I think he would be very happy with this. I don't think this is their BEST album, but I do think it has some of their best work on it. Especially Oderus. Some of his best vocal work to date. Great release guys, can't wait to see the show next month!

Rest In Peace Oderus :(

I've heard 5 songs off the new album so far, and they are awesome!!! Hail Flattus!!!

GWAR (popularly thought to be an acronym for God What an Awful Racket, despite the band's protests to the contrary) are thrash metal's answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWAR were formed at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond as an experiment in marketing strategy by several musicians, art students, and dancers. The group claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in...
