Album Review

The flutist continues his travels, arriving in Egypt to record in the Great Pyramid of Giza. The double-CD set features a powerful introspective suite of 40 spontaneously composed "psalms" created by Horn on piccolo, alto, and C flutes.

Natural resonance

It's worth noting that this was not just recorded "at" the pyramid of Giza. It was recorded in the "King's Chamber" right at the heart of the pyramid. There's an interesting account in the book, "Giza Power Plant" of how Paul began by hitting the large granite coffer in the center of the room with the flat of his hand, which emits a resonant tone of 438Hz (slightly lower than modern A) and tuned his flute to that, and then improvised around that. According to the book, the resonant architecture of the pyramid is apparently an intentional design feature, and also has strong resonance at F# which is considered the natural resonance frequency of the Earth.

the vibes of the pyramids

I bought this album new when it first came out and it was fantastic then and it is still wonderful.
What you can hear is not just Paul Horn playing, it is also the vibrations of the ancient, sacred site of
the early Egyptian civilization.

Genius Lost & Found

Paul Horn's music was silenced this July, 2014, but his music is being re-discovered by fans of jazzx, latin jazz, bossa nova, new age, lounge and any other genre that includes pure-ness of sound. "Inside.." is a wonderful collection of beautiful mystery, sound experiences as if from some new-wave studio, that in fact, is centuries old. It was a grand effort, and worth the tiem to sit down and close yoru eyes while opening yoru ears and mind. A marvelous recording, by a overlooked purist.

Genre: New Age

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s

When one evaluates Paul Horn's career, it is as if he were two people, pre- and post-1967. In his early days, Horn was an excellent cool-toned altoist and flutist, while later he became a new age flutist whose music is often best used as background music for meditation. Horn started on piano when he was four and switched to alto at the age of 12. After a stint with the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra on tenor, Horn was Buddy Collette's replacement with the popular Chico Hamilton Quintet (1956-1958), playing...
