Editors’ Notes

Guided by three friends from Brooklyn and the Bronx, It’s About Time kicked off a new R&B era by encouraging young, black female artists to be themselves. “Blak Pudd’n” and “Downtown” address sex from a lady’s perspective, while SWV take control of a hip-hop beat on “Anything.” With a hook you simply can’t get out of your head, “Weak” is a ’90s R&B standard, but it’s “That’s What I Need” and “You’re Always On My Mind”—a pair of lush, hypnotic ballads—that epitomize the trio’s mature-beyond-their-years vibe.

Customer Reviews

Defines a period in our history, at least mine...

There was a period for a year or so that I'd play this album over and over again. This is great 90's R&B. Go get the mix of "Anything" featuring the Wu Tang Clan. Actually, the entire Remix Album is great. Tidbit: Coko returned to her religious roots and will no longer perform the song "Downtown" anywhere. I'm not kidding, look it up. What's weird is that the original album (not iTunes) had a song titled "Blak Pudd'n". I find it interesting that it's not here.

Classic underrrated R&B

I really wish more people knew about them today.

With their 1992 debut, It's About Time, SWV scored a string of Top Ten R&B hits that established them as one of the most popular R&B groups of the '90s. SWV (their name is an acronym for Sisters with Voices) is comprised of three school friends: Coko (born Cheryl Gamble), Taj (born Tamara Johnson), and Lelee (born Leanne Lyons). All three vocalists sang in church as children, which is where they learned how to harmonize. A demo tape the group assembled caught the attention of producer Teddy Riley,...
