Editors’ Notes

A young, obscure British singer-songwriter followed up two critically well-received but commercially disappointing albums of orchestral folk-pop with this stripped-down, bare and beautiful album from 1972. There's a lot of romantic hoo-hah surrounding tortured poet Drake, who died of an apparent overdose of antidepressant medication two years after the album's release, while still in his mid twenties. While the lyrics are not exactly upbeat ("You can say the sun is shining if you really want to," "I am the parasite of this town") this isn't really a downer album per se. It certainly is unrelentingly beautiful, pulling repeatedly at your heartstrings without ever resorting to cheap sentiment. With Drake's rich melodic voice and acoustic guitar abetted occasionally by a spare piano, Pink Moon is perfect music for a rainy day-whether you buy into its romantic myth or not.

Thanks, Volkswagen

The first time I heard Nick Drake was in a Volkswagen commercial. They used a clip from the title track “Pink Moon.” After some feverish research on Internet, I found out it was Nick Drake and I immediately bought this release. It’s a straight up acoustic record and it is just amazing. Drake’s haunting melodies combined with his effortless vocals and introspective lyrics make for a great record. It’s sad and beautiful and his best release in a short and tragic career. I regret that I never listened to him earlier. Pink Moon will be in my rotation, permanently.

simply amazing

get this. put on headphones. lay out under the stars. you'll get it.

Stark and lovely

A purely satisfactory listening experience, this album features acoustic guitar and voice. A unique combination of masterful playing and introspective lyrics, difficult to categorize yet highly addictive. Less than 30 minutes long, you will want to hear it again and again. Nick Drake was a musical genius. It is a shame that he was not appreciated in his own time. The title song was featured in a car commercial a few years back, which initiated his posthumous comeback.

A singular talent who passed almost unnoticed during his brief lifetime, Nick Drake produced several albums of chilling, somber beauty. With hindsight, these have come to be recognized as peak achievements of both the British folk-rock scene and the entire rock singer/songwriter genre. Sometimes compared to Van Morrison, Drake in fact resembled Donovan much more in his breathy vocals, strong melodies, and the acoustic-based orchestral sweep of his arrangements. His was a much darker vision than Donovan's,...
