KONGOS

KONGOS

The four sons of ‘70s South African singer John Kongos swirl prog, jazz, sub-Saharan rhythms, and Middle Eastern melodies into their strange, muscular rock. Their ability to pull it off owes as much to drummer Jesse’s forceful approach to complex rhythms as to the range of Johnny’s evocative vocals (it helps that he's the accordionist too). “Another Daydream” is a string-laden psychedelic freak-out about isolation, while “Nothing” offers a guitar-crunching ode to the desperate need to believe in something bigger; the straight-ish blues of "Remember Me" hits as hard as the knotty stuff.
