Album Review

An often misunderstood album, this album (aside from the 1971 "reunion" album) was the final record by the Mamas & the Papas. It has held up incredibly well over time, and sounds better today than when it was released in mid-1968. The centerpiece of the album is "Dream a Little Dream," which very well may be the finest cover version that the group ever recorded, and in the end, was a very nice way to end the group's short but incredible career. The album also contains some excellent John Phillips material such as "12:30" (a minor hit), "Rooms," and "Too Late." These three tracks form a mini-medley in the middle of the second side, and add a lot of dimension to the record. Cut at the Phillips' home studio, the album has a simple sound, but when the vocal majesty cuts through on such tracks as "Mansions" (one of the band's lost masterpieces), it's faultless.

Good, not Great

Not too many classics on here but it does have "Dream a Little Dream of Me".

One of my all-time favorites

This album is one of my all-time favorites. The music in it is so very enjoyable to listen to. The chords, the harmonies, the lyrics, the changes are spectacular. So glad to have it in digital format. Safe in my Garden is awesome, and I think the reverse side of that single when it first came out was "Rooms" or Too Late" or "Mansions", incredible songs. I remember hearing "Safe In My Garden" on the radio when it first came out, it was so cool next to the Beatles and The Beach Boys on the radio etc. Some of the lyrics are a bit of a downer, but that's what you need in life - Who is up all the time? Nobody. Sometimes you need music to fit your mood. This is it. If you like Dream a Little Dream of me, check out is album. If you like hard rock, try "Gemini Child," which goes back and forth from hard rock to soft rock like crazy. Also the band behind them was at its apex during this time, with John Phillips on guitar.

Formed: 1965 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

The leading California-based vocal group of the '60s, the Mamas & the Papas epitomized the ethos of the mid- to late-'60s pop culture: live free, play free, and love free. Their music, built around radiant harmonies and a solid electric folk foundation, was gorgeous on its own terms, but a major part of its appeal lay in the easygoing southern California lifestyle it endorsed. The group's success was as extraordinary as it was brief, and onlookers may well wonder what went wrong with a performing...
