Album Review

California death-grinders Cattle Decapitation will never be accused of subtlety, but there are moments on the typically grotesque Monolith of Inhumanity, their seventh long-player, that are unabashedly melodic. The band's penchant for setting off relentless explosions of BPM shrapnel, while vocalist Travis Ryan swallows the microphone and uses his rib cage for a reverb tank, remains steadfast, but the occasional clean vocal in the mix, as heard on the exhilarating "Living, Breathing Piece of Defecating Meat," adds a new vintage black metal patina to the group's signature Carcass/Pig Destroyer-informed attack. Elsewhere, the brooding "The Monolith" engages with its slow-burn Fields of the Nephilim-esque build and bleak spoken word outro, "Projectile Ovulation" (the second best title after the aforementioned "Defecating Meat") is a grindcore drum classic, and epic closer "Kingdom of Tyrants," with its sludgy, anthemic midsection, offers up a montage of all of the band's filthy strengths, before slithering back into the pestilence from which it came.

A Bloody Good Set of Tunes!

They are back! Cattle Decapitation is back with an album showcasing their unique brand of tech-deth. This is a band that keeps evolving for the better while most technical/grindcore/metal bands have reached their peak and are now devolving. If you liked The Harvest FLoor, then you should buy this now. If you liked any of their previous albums you should buy this. If you like blood, guts, and the brutal sickness of their sound in any way, you should buy this. So to sum up... you should buy this!

Holy Cow!

Just started listening to these guys a few months back and I must say, this album has blown my socks clean off. Every single song has something special about it that makes you want to just keep listening to it on repeat. Won't be surprised if I see this record on a lot of Metal Top 10 lists at the end of this year.

Good Lord, This is Insane

Buy it. Just do it now. So incredibly brutal. Pure genius.

Formed: 1996 in San Diego, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Over the course of their existence, the San Diego-based Cattle Decapitation have transformed from a stripped-down gore-grind side project of the arty hardcore/grindcore band the Locust to a full-fledged death metal band of their own, undergoing a confusing maze of lineup changes in the process. The association with the Locust formed much of the original basis for CD's popularity in hardcore circles, which was unusual for a band that growled out the type of disturbing, gore-oriented lyrics usually...
