The Private Lives of Composers

I always wondered what highly successful commercial film composers, whose music I like, would write for themselves. This album goes straight to that point and I only with there were more! I wish we could follow all these composers down that road of personal musical vision.

The surprise of this album to me was the first piece by Bruce Broughton - it is the piece that seems to haves the most to say on a purely musical level. I understand that the project started with him and maybe that's just karma that he wrote the best piece. It has to be said that Williams can of course compose anyone under the table on any day. His personal dialogue with great pianists of the past is fascinating. Desplat channels Debussy in a totally personal legitimate way - Don Davis shows his chops (he's got a good amount of concert music which makes me wish he'd undertake pieces like these mopre often), Randy Newman is pure Randy Newman and I'm grateful he didn't take on an ill-suited modern musical language in his piece - it's straight but GOOD Randy Newman. Probably the weak point of the album is the piece by Michael Giacchino. It must be said that he is by far the youngest composer on this album. You could make the case that Williams didn't become Williams until around the mid-1970s when he was in his mid-40s. That may be the case for Giacchino. He may not have found his own voice yet but that's not to say he's not talented.

I repeat, I wish these guys would write more like this!

Delicate, complex and nuanced compositions !

This is a really cool concept - Legendary film composers writing for solo piano and performed by the fabulous Grammy Nominee Gloria Cheng ! Delicate, complex and nuanced compositions played with equal skill by Ms. Cheng. I really enjoyed seeing and hearing this intimate personal side of these great film composers.
